Photography has many different categories to it, and those going into the business may want to specialise. If so, then there are several different approaches they can take in order to market and expand their business.
Different Niches
There are some very popular niches when it comes to photography, which include the following:
- Wedding Photography: This is one of the most popular specialties, and often the one that photographers start out with. This can be a seasonal business, although it is becoming increasingly popular for weddings to be held at all times of the year.
- Event Photography: This is a totally different type of photography, and requires a different kind of training. Photographers that cover events typically take photographs to be used for advertising and marketing purposes, or for printed material.
- Portrait Photography: This, too, is a different type of photography, but it’s also one that calls for dealing directly with people. Most often, this type of photography takes place in the studio rather than at outside locations. This specialisation has its own raft of benefits and challenges.
Earning a Reputation
No matter which speciality is chosen in photography, they all must be adequately marketed if the photographer is going to run a successful business. Each has a slightly different marketing approach, because they each have their own target markets. In these cases, however, portfolios are a must.
Portfolios
Be it a virtual or hard copy, a good portfolio is a necessity. When it comes to photography, clients always want to see examples of the photographer’s skill. The portfolio allows the photographer to display their best work. Portfolios are typically the major selling tool available to the photographer.
It takes some careful thinking when branching into a speciality. A great deal of research should be done first to determine the demand for any particular style of photography.
